SFERA History and General Background

Area Acquisition History

On 8th November 2021, during the University Management Committee (Jawatankuasa Pengurusan Universiti) meeting, the committee agreed to recommend that plots of land marked No. 7, No. 8, No. 17, and No. 22e in the Campus Land Use Planning Plan be gazetted for the use of Faculty of Tropical Forestry activities and programs.

On 22nd June 2022, in conjunction with the celebration of World Forestry Day at the University level, this gazetted 62-acre land area was inaugurated and announced as SFERA@UMS (Sustainable Forest Education and Research Area) by Professor Datuk ChM. Ts. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin, UMS Vice Chancellor at that time.

SFERA@UMS Area Blocks

The management of SFERA@UMS is divided into two management blocks, namely SFERA Utama and SFERA Arboretum. SFERA Utama block is a forest area used for teaching and learning activities in forestry sciences, including restoration, forest plantation, agroforestry, recreation, forest management, forest climatology, and research. Meanwhile, the SFERA Arboretum block is an area dedicated to the collection of native and endemic plants, with a focus on activities to develop SFERA Arboretum into an Eco-tourism Forest Park.
