General Information
Upper canopy tree up to 45 m tall and 75(-80) cm dbh. Stipules absent. Leaves opposite, simple, penni-veined, venation prominent, glabrous. Flowers ca. 12 mm diameter, white-yellowish, protruding stamens, flowers in panicles. Fruits ca. 35 mm diameter, green, fleshy berries.
Can be found in its natural habitat of forest on rocky sea shores and sandy beaches behind the Casuarina, but also in undisturbed mixed dipterocarp, kerangas, swamp and ultramafic forests up to 1700 m altitude. Often on alluvial sites near or along rivers and streams, but also on hillsides and ridges on sandy soils.
In Malaysia, Singapore, and some Southeast Asian countries, this tree is commonly planted along roadsides. In the State of Sabah, active planting of this tree as a roadside species began between 2000 and 2005 along major roads surrounding Kota Kinabalu. At Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Eugenia grandis trees have been planted as roadside trees since the university's construction began around 1990-1994. These trees at UMS have naturally spread from roadsides into the nearby forests, including the SFERA Forest. Forest inventories have revealed that mature Eugenia grandis trees in the SFERA forest typically measure between 10cm and 18cm of diameter at breast height (dbh).
Native Distribution: India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia.
